Panel Discussion: Building Back Better and Greener – Decarbonising the £500bn Public Estate

While the built environment is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact, that also means there is huge potential for the changes we make to be a force for good – building back better and greener.

With the government being clear that tackling climate change is a top priority this panel will discuss and debate how the UK public estate will play a significant role in the country’s journey towards net zero and enhancing the sustainability of our built environment.

Areas for discussion:

  • Retrofitting and decarbonising existing buildings.
  • Meeting net zero and balancing that with the overall asset management strategy
  • The importance of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to drive down emissions from public buildings such as schools, hospitals and council buildings.
  • Modern Energy Partners programme with Energy Systems Catapult – establishing new pathways to retrofitting and decarbonising parts of the public estate, making it easier for others to adopt similar measures.
  • How do we adopt sustainable construction principles and to design, build and buy properties which are sustainable, durable and easy to maintain.
  • Discuss what support and products are around aimed at supporting retrofit and new build activities to help drive progress to net zero across the public estate.

How the Rise of Sustainability and Wellbeing are Shaping the Future World of Work

Join industry experts Jeremy Campbell, Executive Director and Ian Baker, Head of Workplace as they explore in lively discussion the unstoppable rise of sustainability and wellbeing and the impact they are having on workplace and the world of work. They will cover key questions including, what are the challenges facing the public estate?  What are the opportunities for long-term transformation? And what will it mean to embrace or ignore these? Finally, how do we create workplaces to engender a sense of wellbeing and make them a destination of choice?

None of us can predict the future; we all have a role to play in creating it.

Wellbeing and sustainability are colliding with the rise of tech and AI.  Traditional organisational models, estate management and FM procurement are already disrupted. The world of work and in turn the workplace has entered a new paradigm based on services developed in harmony with the climate, employee experiences, lifestyle choices, and creating workplaces where diversity and inclusion are respected.

Jeremy and Ian will share their knowledge and experience with practical examples outlining how wellbeing and sustainability are transforming the very fabric of workplaces, and show why the public estate must respond fast in order to survive.
